THE HAMBURG INSURANCE EXCHANGE

Cradle of Hamburg's Insurance Business

The Hamburg Insurance Exchange is unique on the German insurance scene and reflects the highly specific importance of Hamburg as a centre of trade and insurance. Worldwide, the only other Insurance Exchanges are located in Rotterdam and London, and they are differently structured.

As opposed to stock and commodity futures exchanges, nothing is actually traded on the Hamburg Insurance Exchange. Instead, it serves the insurance industry as a forum for the exchange of information, as well as for business processing, mainly in the so-called commercial insurance branches (transport insurance, fire and liability insurance for industry). The insurance agents admitted to the Exchange, freelance brokers, underwriters and experts also utilise the daily Exchange meetings to arrange matters of current contracts as well as to sign and exchange documents.

The history of the Insurance Exchange goes back to the founding of the Hamburg Exchange in 1558. From the very beginning, besides merchandise trade, the insurance of goods transport was also a fixed component of the transactions. Also even today, the activity of the Hamburg Insurance Exchange broadly follows the centuries-old tradition. As a timeless platform for the personal meeting and communication between business partners, it will also be a firm institution in the Hamburg insurance business of the future.
