THE GRAIN EXCHANGE

Hamburg’s sole commodity exchange

The Hamburg Grain Exchange is the sole remaining active commodity exchange forming part of the Hamburg Exchange. It offers a forum for the players active in the grain trade and serves for the preparation and mediation of commercial transactions in grain, oilseed, animal feed, pulses, seed and related products, as well as service provision with regard to the above-mentioned articles. The Hamburg Grain Exchange is operated by the Association of Grain Traders of the Hamburg Exchange (Verein der Getreidehändler der Hamburger Börse e.V.), which at the same time is the approved and official mouthpiece and representative of the interests of wholesalers and overseas merchants of the above-mentioned products.

One important task of the Hamburg Grain Exchange consists of the publication of form contracts for the trade in grain, animal feed and pulses. These contracts are valid worldwide, but are principally employed in European countries. Arbitration is closely linked to contracting. Each year, a total of 70 to 80 hearings are settled, often also involving foreign participants. The advantages of the private Arbitration Board consist not only of the speed and technical expertise of the referees, but also of the fact that arbitrations can also be executed on grounds of international arrangements in international trade.

Every year in January, April and August, supraregional physical Exchanges take place in the Hamburg Exchange. The positive response of the industry to these events is impressive proof of the desire and necessity for personal contact as well as for the exchange of experience.

The basis of the business activity of the Exchange are the exchange regulations of the Grain Exchange.
