THE
HAMBURG INSURANCE EXCHANGE
Cradle of Hamburg's Insurance Business
The Hamburg Insurance Exchange is unique
on the German insurance scene and reflects
the highly specific importance of Hamburg as
a centre of trade and insurance. In fact,
the only other insurance exchanges in the
world are located in Rotterdam and London.
As opposed to stock and commodity futures
exchanges nothing is actually traded on the
Hamburg Insurance Exchange, it acts rather
as a place for initiating and bringing to
fruition contracts, particularly industrial
and commercial insurance coverage (transport,
fire and liability). Despite the growing use
of mobile phones and the Internet personal
contact and exchange is absolutely essential
for insurance company representatives with
an exchange permit, free-lance brokers,
underwriters and external claim experts
during daily exchange meetings.
The history of the Insurance Exchange
goes back to the founding of the Hamburg
Stock Exchange in 1558. From the very
beginning, insurance transactions were just
as much an integral part of Hamburg exchange
transactions as were commodity trading and
banking. In many ways, the Hamburg Insurance
Exchange follows the same century-old
traditions, yet it is a lively and intensely
used institution, a venue for business
associates to meet, discuss and exchange
business information and it will continue to
be a firm institution in the Hamburg
insurance business.
